Many software companies claim to keep your Mac clean or remove viruses etc. This is true, but if you don't want to spend a penny on a special utility cleaning software, then you can clean up your Mac storage manually for free.

You can optimize Mac storage and speed up its performance better than before. In this post, I will guide you how to clean up a Mac in less than 10 minutes.

How do I Clean Up My Mac Hard Drive

I have been using Mac for a long time and it is a common practice that after a few days of use, it starts slowing down.

When I faced this problem then I started searching on Google how I do clean up My Mac so it runs faster. So guys check the following tips to see how you can optimize Mac speed for better the performance.

If you start to run out of hard drive space a lot of these tricks are going to help you.

All right everyone. Here we go…

So I'm just going to throw at you a ton of different little tips and tricks to keep your Mac running its best and hopefully make sure that it lasts a really long time!

#1. Run Software Update

A lot of people already do this which is great but not everyone. So just remember to run software update which you can access by going to the Apple icon at the top left corner of the screen and go to software update.

Main Screen > Apple Icon > Software Update

This just checks for the latest version of the software that's installed in your computer. This does not include third-party software that you downloaded off the internet but for any apps that you've downloaded through the App Store.

The basic programs the iLife suite that comes with the Mac which includes iPhoto, iMovie etc all of those are included in this and you just want to make sure that all the updates have in fact run and they are up-to-date.

So updating your software will frequently provide feature and speed enhancements. The latest update makes your Macbook, MacAir performance better.

#2. Restart or Shutdown Computer

It is a good idea to restart or shut down your computer once a month. A lot of laptop owners these days just let their computers sleep when they're not using it.

That's totally fine. That's actually what I do.

But it is still a good idea to restart or shutdown once a month. The reason being there are certain updates that will not run unless the computer restarts or shuts down.

Also there are certain cache files, unnecessary files that won't clear out unless you do that. So about once a month it is good idea to do that.

#3. Get Rid of Old APPS

It’s better to remove old apps that you no longer have a use for now. If you are not using an app or apps for a long time, then just remove them and claim hard disk space.

You can do this cleaning process either manually or using an App cleaner utility. This utility will help you automatically clean up Mac hard disk in few minutes.

Here I want to add one more thing. If you have installed a piece of software called Mac keeper, then just uninstall it.

The Mac keeper can hide files in somewhere between 10 to 20 different locations in the Mac and even if you use app cleaner it's nearly impossible to remove all of them.

#4. Delete the Content of SyncServices & iTunes Folder

SyncServices and iTunes folders contain ton of unnecessary stuff. So it is better to delete all these junk content.

If you are running low on hard drive space, then this tip is going to definitely help you.

To clean up, follow the given path…

Open the Library Folder > Application Support Folder > SyncServices Folder

Whatever inside the SyncServices folder, just select all of them and delete them permanently.

Follow the same process to delete junk files from iTunes folder.

Open the Library Folder > iTunes Folder

Now select all junk files, or a file with couple of gigabytes and trash them!

#5. Empty Trash after Deleting Files

Trash contains all your deleted stuff. Whatever you delete, it goes into the trash folder. This takes memory and sometimes slows down your Mac speed.

So after deleting files, don’t forget to visit Trash folder and don’t forget to empty that.

Go to trash > Click on Empty Trash button

It is a good habit periodically to go into the trash and empty the trash. This way you can clean up Mac hard drive and easily claim some extra space.

#6. Clean up Mac Cache Regularly

Cleaning cache regularly is one of the best ways to make Mac faster. So if want to speed up your device then don’t forget to delete unwanted temporary files, junk data, and scripts from your computer hard drive.

Read more about how to clear Mac cache to speed up or free up extra space in depth from here.

#7. Remove Old iOS Backups

Having your files properly backed up is a highly recommendable. But over time your Mac becomes overloaded with old backups that take extra gigabytes of storage on your hard disk drive.

That’s why you should consider removing the old iOS backups you no longer need.

Each backup remains stored on your computer and is easily accessible via the iTunes. To delete the old backups, you need to do the following:

  • Launch the iTunes.
  • In the Menu bar, go to iTunes > Preferences.
  • Click the Devices tab to find the backup list.
  • Choose backups you want to delete and click Delete Backup.
That’s it! The backup files are gone from your Mac forever.

So guys, these are the tips and tricks that I always use to Clean up My Mac.

Follow all these tips to keep your Mac clean.
